It's highly likely that you have not been taught how to show the value of what you do with metrics. You might have even avoided metrics all together. But there comes a time in your career where you know exactly how important it is to have metrics. It's when you're looking for a new job.
One way or another you will leave your current job. It's guaranteed.
If you want to get a new job, you will:
- Have to make the case your work created impact
- Need a portfolio to help make that case
Every portfolio is a story about before and after. What the design was before and after. How the customers felt before and after. The direction the business was going before and after.
You don't want to be stuck trying to create a portfolio without clear examples of before and after. Metrics are a very effective way to tell your story and in 2025, a must for your portfolio. It's what hiring managers are looking for.
To get metrics for your portfolio, do this one thing:
- Take 15-30 minutes to write down the value of the metrics you see at work. Do it today.
- Doesn't matter if you "own" them. Doesn't matter if they're in a dashboard, in an email, or part of some presentation deck.
- Write down the value, then do it again every 30 days.
- Repeat that exercise until you leave.
Your future you will thank you.
